REVIEW
Hello again, Galaxies! This is my first movie review on the blog, so yay for that! I recently watched this movie on Netflix and I absolutely loved it. However, it is important to acknowledge that this is not a mind-blowing movie in terms of the concept, because in that sense, I must admit that it was a cliché. The movie follows the story of Calvin, a hypochondriac that after going to a cancer support group-without having the illness but feeling as if he did- encounters himself forced into the plans of Skye to fulfill her before-I-die-bucket list. Again, reminder that the story holds a cliché atmosphere. Skye has all sorts of wishes in her list: steal something, help a sad case, make love, etc. At first, I thought the story was going to turn into a romance between Calvin and Skye, but the fact that it didn’t made my whole experience watching the film much better. Instead of a love story between them, we get to see the flourishing of one of the most genuine, funny and united friendship I had seen, and I think that is what made me love the story so much. The very same blurb of the movie suggests that Skye is dying, however, I had a tiny spark of hope of seeing her live. I must admit I shed some tears, especially in a certain part I will not mention for the sake of those who haven’t watched the movie. The places chosen for the scenes were quite beautiful, and the music selection was nice, it added to the ambiance of every part. I had seen Asa Butterfield in my all-time favorite science fiction movie Ender’s Game and the recently acclaimed Netflix tv series Sex Education, and his acting here was outstanding. As for Maisie Williams, I was really surprised. I’ve only watched Maisie in Game of Thrones, and getting to appreciate her phenomenal work in a different spectrum was definitely refreshing and mesmerizing. Something I disliked about the movie, is that we don’t get to know much about Skye’s type of cancer, and Calvin’s hypochondria was only pretty much relevant at the beginning of the movie. I believe the director and writers focused more on the humanistic aspect of their relationship rather than their illnesses on purpose. Other mental illnesses portrayed in the movie are anxiety and depression, although again, they were not developed in detail. The romance between Calvin and his crush, Izzy, was weird for me, but thankfully the main focus of the movie is not that. All in all, I’m giving this movie eight out of ten bright cosmos. If you’re looking for something to get your mind off routine and just relax- and perhaps let out a tear or two- I absolutely recommend you give the movie a try! That is all for now, and thank you so much for reading, until the next instance!
